Simulations and calculations are utterly helpful and absolutely necessary. Though, they cannot substitute tests on real systems (functional models and prototypes). A (mathematical) model is - as the name suggests - a simplified substitution of a real physical system. The modelling of the physical system supports the engineer during the product development process. The developed concept and ultimately the resulting product must be verified with suitable tests, though. Here again - as mentioned under the menu item "Simulation & Calculation" - the engineer is responsible for deciding when and to what extent a test is necessary. Tests are carried out - similar to simulations & calculations - in order to obtain additional information about the technical system. The various tests differ considerably depending on the progress of the product development process and the knowledge gain aimed for.
